Identity Crisis
The Indians remain uncertain about RHP Roberto Hernandez’s future. Formerly known as Fausto Carmona, Hernandez remains in the Dominican Republic, where he was arrested in January on identity fraud charges. Acta said Hernandez’s representatives thought he would have rejoined the club by now, but he’s been unable to get a work visa to return to the U.S.

Mark Richardson: Things I Remember Writing:... →
Have you read Mark Richardson? If not, you are really missing out.
markrichardson:
Writing and memory are closely linked.
This quote from Ernest Hemingway regarding his experiences with electroconvulsive therapy (which I’m sure I read before I started to think of myself as a writer) has stuck with me:
Well, what is the sense of ruining my head and erasing my memory, which is…

Lost Weekend
I somehow managed to drink beer at 7+ new places this weekend. It helped that I went to Tacoma where every place was new to me. Friday
The Wurst Place is on one of the weird, under-construction blocks in South Lake Union. Even though I work pretty close by, everything in that area seems imaginary and divorced from the rest of that part of Seattle, so much so that I often forget about it entirely....
Coming to Terms: Franzen, Wallace and the Question... →
This lovely essay voices many of my concerns about Jonathan Franzen, a few of my complimentary thoughts about David Foster Wallace, and perhaps even some heretofore under-examined (by me) ideas about the uses of modern literature.

4. Women’s tears reduce sexual desire in men.
Women’s tears contain a chemical signal that lowers testosterone levels and dampens sexual desire in men, according to a team of scientists in Israel.
They studied the effect on men of sniffing fresh tears, which the researchers collected in vials as they rolled down the faces of women watching weepy movies.

Next Step: Loan Strike! by Lawrence Weschler - The... →
‘The plan should be to spend the next several months developing, articulating, and organizing toward a major national mortgage and student-loan strike. Such a loan strike would begin—provided enough people sign on in advance (and I’m talking hundreds of thousands), and unless a concrete set of intervening demands is squarely met in the meantime—on, say, October 1, 2012, right in the...

Beer + Kombucha →
‘Lambrucha is by no means the last word on blending beer and kombucha. Goose Island has produced a Belgian pale ale with hibuscus and kombucha called Fleur. And homebrewers have discovered that Kombucha (culture) could be another trick to produce sour beers.’
