John Berger’s Ways of Seeing had a lot of great commentary on art, culture, and commerce, but for me maybe the most interesting part was his comparison between Pieter Brueghel and Adriaen Brouwer. I found Brouwer’s peasants fascinating, but mostly “The Bitter Draught,”, shown above, which is also featured in Brouwer’s Cafe in Seattle.
I’d always thought Brouwer’s was named after something to do with brewers/breweries in Belgium, but now I have to wonder whether or not it has to do with the 17th century painter, instead.
